We fished with Harlan Smith, Bruce and Zane and his 8 year old son Jaimen last Saturday. I spoke to Harlan during the week and asked if he could reschedule his trip due to the poor fishing conditions we were having. It has been slow with a few fish being caught. Harlan decided he wanted to give it a try anyway and was looking forward to a day on the water. We have fished together for several years now and Harlan always brings the best of attitudes and some good luck. We decided to give it a shot which turned out to be a great decision. They arrived about 6:oo am and we got things together and made our way out the inlet. Young Jaimen joined me up on the bridge for most of the day helping me run the boat. What a great kid as he listened well and paid close attention to everything going on. We first ran NE of the inlet to about 45 feet of water and started marking bait. I kept going and ran out of the bait so we decided to start there. We set our lines and trolled back through the bait. The water temp was 48 degrees and the water was cloudy and green. The bait was still there, we didn’t get a touch after 45 minutes so we pulled everything in and ran up the beach about 7 miles. We started fishing in 60 feet of water and were at it for about 1 hour.
The water temperature was 49 to 50 degrees, a little cleaner and then we got our first bite on a custom bunker spoon. It turned out to be a 44” Striper; a very nice fish. Zane and His Son Jaimen double teamed this fish and did a great job on it. This fish was almost as big as Jaimen! They did a great job getting him to the boat. Next up was Bruce he landed a nice 40 incher on the green spoon. The next one came on a green spoon as well for Harlan. The water surface temperature was up to 52.5 degrees and the fishing started improving for us. We worked a spot and picked up four more Stripers. Then Harlan wanted to try some Fluke fishing so we left them biting at about 1:00 pm, the first bite was at about 10 AM. On the way back to the inlet we hit some huge schools of bunker so we tried casting some plugs and Jaimien snagged a bunker. He was pretty happy to catch him as well. No sign of any bass so we moved on to try fluking where Jaimien was the only one to catch a short. It turned out to be a great day ending up with 7 Stripers. It’s definitely striper time and I still have dates open. Call us at 855-468-2248 to book!
